Bishops call for amnesty for political prisoners

The chair of the Venezuelan Catholic Plenary Council Monsignor Ovidio Pérez Morales Wednesday insisted that the Episcopate is asking for the amnesty law issued by President Hugo Chávez to be applied to political prisoners such as the former police chiefs of the Caracas Metropolitan Police (PM) Lázaro Forero and Henry Vivas, and former Caracas Metropolitan Mayoralty Citizens' Security secretary Iván Simonovis, who Tuesday were denied a petition to dismiss their case, related to April 2002 events.
"The country needs reconciliation badly. We need Venezuela to be a genuine common house where we respect each other and co-exist as a family."
He added that freedom is a big challenge.
"We need to learn how to forgive and understand, as that is the only way to a better society."
