A Newsletter of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's International Division
Dear Colleagues,
Enclosed is a copy of a speech that our President and CEO Tom Donohue delivered today at an event marking the 50th anniversary of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. He traveled to East Lansing to remind Americans that it was our free enterprise system and our values of individual initiative, hard work, and innovation that built our great country-and trade has been central to our success.
(Donohue Trade Speech)
In the speech, he emphasized the following key points:
A major surge of exports is our best path out of recession, double digit unemployment, and exploding deficits.
We're already the world's largest exporter. We can build on that and create millions of new jobs by aggressively competing in markets abroad and by rejecting a growing isolationism at home.
We should set a national goal of doubling U.S. exports in five years. To achieve this goal we must:
Enact pending free trade agreements. Our competitors have over a hundred preferential deals in the works with each other while we are sitting on our hands.
Bring about a successful conclusion to Doha, which could open emerging markets to American goods and services and boost the global economy by $700 billion.
