Obama's Biden pick could herald a better US foreign policy

Obama's Biden pick could herald a better US foreign policy

As the US presidential elections shift into high gear in the coming weeks with the Democratic and Republican conventions, the people of the Middle East will begin to get a better sense of how each of the two parties might conduct foreign policy in this region. Already, the presumptive Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, has given us a strong indication of how America will operate with the selection of his running mate, Senator Joseph Biden: His choice of a seasoned foreign policy expert suggests that if he is elected, we can expect a welcome departure from the status quo.
Here in the trouble-ridden Middle East, the countdown to US President George W. Bush's departure from politics began in earnest some time ago. The people of the region have endured nearly eight years of Bush's rudderless policy and ill-advised decisions, coupled with his studied neglect of the Arab-Israeli peace process during his first seven years in office. Most Arabs are now ready for a changing of the guard at the White House, regardless of who the American people might choose as their next president. But many are also hoping that the next administration will demonstrate a better grasp of the workings of this region.
