Dear Friends:
One of Florida’s best past times is walking along our beautiful beaches and soaking up some sun. However, like most things, too much of something is not always a good thing.According to recent statistics taken by the Bureau of Epidemiology in Florida, the incidence rate of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, has risen by 58% since 1981. This year alone, more than one million new cases of skin cancer will be found in the U.S. This is a serious problem that can affect anyone of us if we don’t take the proper precautions. From an early age, we can begin putting ourselves at risk toward developing melanoma or any other kind of skin cancer. The more exposure our skin has toward ultraviolet rays, the more we put ourselves at risk. A majority of studies have shown a relationship between childhood sunburns and the subsequent risk of developing melanoma. Proper preventative measures must be applied from the youngest of age.
